If you are in love with expanse landscapes that are very predominant in Africa and even more so in Kenya then this post is for you. Over the weekend we happened to join a group of friends for an out of town stay at Ol-Talet.

Ol-Talet Cottage is a quaint little self-catered house with a pretty appropriate name – Ol Talet, meaning ‘the place with a view from above’ in Masaai. Another gem of a place tucked away in the picturesque landscapes of The Great Rift Valley, at the edge of Olepolos hill.

Getting to Ol-Talet

This magical little stunning house sits about 45km out of Nairobi, passed Champagne Ridge, Corner Baridi and Kiserian town, right next to popular Nyama Choma joint – Ole Polos Country Club. It should take you about 1hr 30mins to get there from CBD, Nairobi (but really depends on the kind of driver you are and the traffic situation).

The cottage consists of 2 double rooms and 1 twin room. The master room and one double room are located on the lower floor. The bathroom with the best view of Ngong is on this floor too. The upper floor offers the third room. The Open plan kitchen, dining and living room combined makes it very cosy. The front deck gives way to breathtaking views. Sit on the low chairs or on the high stools for evening sundowners. A small garden near the entrance of the cottage is ideal for a small set up for meals or just to relax on mats and cushions. BBQ grill available for the grill food lovers.

Overall Experience

We arrived at the house at 2 pm. It did not matter where you were, you had something great to see. An easy (and close) escape from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi. The structure was made up of a combination of stone, wood and a thatched roof, giving it a really homely and rustic feel. Inspired by the Masaai, the décor was quite tasty as well- simple and contemporary with the highlight being a wall of tribal masks and stained glass window by the stairwell.

Living Room

The views from the terrace and living room were breathtaking but our personal favorite was the panoramic view of Masai land from the shower- a rain shower! A glorious shower staring out to the Great Rift Valley, contemplating life and wondering if our neighbors in Nairobi really missed us! Honestly, salute to the architect and her/his prime positioning of this bathroom because it will forever be ingrained deep in our memory. But the large windows were really to thank for the epic views. If there’s 6 of you, then please be conservative with the water or the last two are getting cold showers (learnt this the hard way).

Ol-Talet Sitting Space

Ol Talet is a great base if you want to explore the south of Ngong Hills, check out Lake Magadi or discover  Olorgesailie (a pre-historic site where early humans lived about 1.2 million to 490,000 years ago). Definitely grab a bite at Ole Polos Country Club and have a swim there if it’s a hot day.
