A few weeks back, we got a chance to kick off our heels and catch up with nature at a charming cabin at the slopes of Mt.Kenya. Castle Forest Lodge is the perfect place to get away from the city for just a day or two and enjoy the forest and tranquility that comes with it.

Getting There

From Nairobi

Drive on the A2 for approximately 96 km to Sagana and branch on your right to Kagio-Kutus road on the c73. Drive for another 20km to Kutus Post Office and chapter on the next left towards Kutus-Kabare Road. Drive for 4km and depart on the left at Rukenya Shopping Centre, head on for the next 20km and get to the Lodge.

Castle Forest Lodge is a little gem located on the slopes of Mt.Kenya.We arrived late in the afternoon and Anthony; the manager received us. Our charming, snug and eccentric two-bedroom cabin offered phenomenal panoramic views of the rainforest. It was right on edge, and one can experience an impressive sight of the rainforest that is home to elephants, hyenas and a variety of other wildlife.

The decor of the cabin was a great blend of tribal and African with pops of color that made it all so awesome and right up our alley; especially when it came to the comfiest hammock outside our cabin. The timber cabin features a large living area with a fireplace that is lit at night to keep the visitors warm, a large washroom, two bedrooms that are bright and airy with windows overlooking the scenic lodge.

The lodge has other timber cabins that are smaller but cozy and rooms up the restaurant where it’s rumored the current queen visited 🙂

Chalet Montane

This beautiful spacious self-catering cabin sleeps 4 in one double bedroom and a loft with a double bed. There is plenty of space to put extra beds or mattresses. It has a fully equipped kitchen with a gas oven and a fridge, a large living room with a fireplace and a verandah with magnificent views of Mt.Kenya.

The Restaurant and Bar

The restaurant was quite affordable, with a daily changing menu and snacks that were available throughout the day. It was quite phenomenal to enjoy the scenic view of the forest from the top restaurant deck.

On our second day we had a classic English breakfast up the restaurant verandah; toasted bread, Spanish omelet, bacon, tea/coffee, and juice. It was a very relaxed affair, and afterward, we got to enjoy the castle’s nature trail.

Fun things to do

The lodge is also home to friendly horses and dogs who made our stay at the inn slightly more homely. They had a swimming pool which we didn’t enjoy due to the chilly weather.

For all the nature lovers, the lodge has a tonne of activities from nature walks to the castle’s waterfalls, fishing, horse riding and trekking up the bamboo forest.

The lodge has camping grounds too. To book your stay visit their Website.

We attribute this post to Castle Forest Lodge, who was our official sponsors. Much appreciation goes to Castle Forest for such an extraordinary experience.
