Haller Park, a gorgeous sanctuary in Bamburi, previously known as Bamburi Quarry Nature Trail. It is now named after the founder, Dr. René Haller, who has done the unthinkable and managed to transform barren limestone quarries into what is now a thriving ecosystem of forest, grasslands and ponds. Haller Park is situated on the North Coast of Mombasa along the Mombasa Malindi road, next to the Bamburi Cement factory.

The diverse vegetation is considerable, from mangrove palms and majestic indigenous shade trees to coastal forests where several of these plants are rare and endangered; a haven for botanist. There are beautiful walking trails where you can wander and see various animals such as giraffes, hippos, reptiles and bird species. It is actually hard to believe that Haller Park was once a rough, uninspiring quarry. Visitors can enjoy a quiet nature trail or even a jungle jog for the fit enthusiasts.

The main attractions of the park are the Reptile Park with a rich variety of snake species,  crocodile farm, small fish pond, game sanctuary and the butterfly pavilion .We had the opportunity to watch Owen and Cleo, their renown hippos, feed at the Game Sanctuary. For all the bird lovers this park has an endless list of birds;Weaver birds, Kingfisher, Storks, Herons, Egrets, Owls, Eagles, Kites, Cranes, Ibis, Sandpipers the list is endless.

If you are a monkey lover you will be pleased to find these cheeky clowns everywhere across the park hanging from trees or thieving the food of the other animals

The Giraffe feeding session was the highlight of our trip. Just beautiful majestic animals and with eye lashes to cause major envy! Feeding them was just so much fun. If you haven’t had a chance to do this yet we highly recommend it. Buying the bags of pellets only costs 50 shillings but the experience is one of which will have a lasting memory.
